    Big Bear Discovery Center

    The Big Bear Discovery Center will be closed as of November 11, 2019, for renovations. It is expected to reopen in summer 2020.

    • Adventure Passes can be purchased in the area at 30 local businesses, which are listed here (search for Big Bear and Fawnskin separately in the "Search all columns" box). 
    • Wood permits can be purchased by appointment at the forest headquarters in San Bernardino by calling 909-382-2600 or by completing the Feedback Form on the Forest's Contact Us webpage.

    Campgrounds listed below are closed beyond their normal days of operation.


    Black Mountain Group Campground

    February 2019 - Unknown

    This campground near Idyllwild is closed due to damage from storms in February 2019. The expected opening date is June 27, 2019, however it may be pushed.


    Boulder Basin Campground

    February 2019 - Unknown

    This campground near Idyllwild is closed due to damage from storms in February 2019. The expected opening date is June 27, 2019, however it may be pushed.


    Dark Canyon Campground

    February 2019 - Unknown

    This campground near Idyllwild is closed due to damage from storms in February 2019. There is currently no anticipated opening date.


    Gray's Peak Group Campground

    Summer 2018 - Unknown

    Closed due to road damage from the February 2019 storms, there is no anticipated opening date for this campsite.


    Keller Peak Yellow Post Site #3

    Summer 2018 - Unknown

    There is no anticipated opening date for this campsite.

    Pacific Crest Trail, Mile Marker 172.5

    May 24 - Unknown

    Multiple hikers have reported an impassable rock slide at this location, which is between Antsell Peak and South Peak.


    According to the PCTA, "If it’s impassable, northbound hikers can return to the Spitler Trail near mile 168.5 and take that west down the mountain, to the trailhead and then walk Apple Canyon Road to the highway in order to exit. Southbound hikers would return to the South Ridge Trail or Devil’s Slide Trail and exit to Idyllwild."


    Upper Big Falls Closure

    An off-trail area around one of Southern California’s tallest waterfalls will be closed to the public under Forest Order. Visitors will still be able to hike the Big Falls Trail (1E13) to the waterfall overlook, but areas beyond the railing will be closed for safety.

    1N09 Recreational Shooting Sites

    Due to damage from the Feb. 14, 2019 storm, this area is currently closed


    San Jacinto (Idyllwild) Area

    Bee Canyon Recreational Shooting Sites

    Highway 74 and Bee Canyon road are closed to public access due to washouts.


    Farview Point

    Currently unreachable by vehicle, due to storm damage on Black Mountain Road and Highway 243


    Fuller Ridge Trail

    Currently unreachable by vehicle, due to storm damage on Black Mountain Road and Highway 243

    Temporary Shooting Restrictions

    September 18, 2019 - December 31, 2019

    Due to hazardous fire conditions, recreational target shooting will only be allowed within shooting ranges under permit. See Forest Order.
