    San Bernardino National Forest recreation update


    The San Bernardino National Forest has made the decision to open the following developed recreation sites beginning May 22, 2020:

    Big Bear Discovery Center

    The Big Bear Discovery Center will be closed as of November 11, 2019, for renovations. It is expected to reopen in summer 2020.

    • Adventure Passes can be purchased in the area at 30 local businesses, which are listed here (search for Big Bear and Fawnskin separately in the "Search all columns" box). 
    • Wood permits can be purchased by appointment at the forest headquarters in San Bernardino by calling 909-382-2600 or by completing the Feedback Form on the Forest's Contact Us webpage.

    Campgrounds

    Many of our campgrounds close during the winter season, please check individual pages for information on the status of each campground!


    Campgrounds listed below are closed beyond their normal days of operation.


    Applewhite Campground

    This campground in Lytle Creek is closed due to damage from storms in November 2019.


    Black Mountain Group Campground

    This campground near Idyllwild is closed due to damage from storms in February 2019.


    Boulder Basin Campground

    This campground near Idyllwild is closed due to damage from storms in February 2019.


    Dark Canyon Campground

    This campground near Idyllwild is closed due to damage from storms in February 2019.


    Gray's Peak Group Campground

    Summer 2018 - Unknown

    Closed due to road damage from the February 2019 storms, there is no anticipated opening date for this campsite.


    Keller Peak Yellow Post Site #3

    Summer 2018 - Unknown

    There is no anticipated opening date for this campsite.

    Pacific Crest Trail, Mile Marker 172.5

    May 24 - Unknown

    Multiple hikers have reported an impassable rock slide at this location, which is between Antsell Peak and South Peak.


    According to the PCTA, "If it’s impassable, northbound hikers can return to the Spitler Trail near mile 168.5 and take that west down the mountain, to the trailhead and then walk Apple Canyon Road to the highway in order to exit. Southbound hikers would return to the South Ridge Trail or Devil’s Slide Trail and exit to Idyllwild."


    Upper Big Falls Closure

    An off-trail area around one of Southern California’s tallest waterfalls will be closed to the public under Forest Order. Visitors will still be able to hike the Big Falls Trail (1E13) to the waterfall overlook, but areas beyond the railing will be closed for safety.

    Applewhite Picnic Area

    The sites are currently closed due to numerous downed trees and branches that fell during the Thanksgiving Weekend storm. There is no estimated date for reopening the sites.


    San Jacinto (Idyllwild) Area

    Farview Point

    Currently unreachable by vehicle, due to storm damage on Black Mountain Road.


    Fuller Ridge Trail

    Currently unreachable by vehicle, due to storm damage on Black Mountain Road.

    1N01 (Pipes Canyon)

    November 1, 2019 - October 31, 2020

    Forest Road lN0l is closed to vehicles under Forest Order from its intersection with State Highway 38, then southeast to its intersection with the Forest boundary (Section 10, Range lN Township 3E, San Bernardino Base and Meridian). Map


    1N37A (Bean Flat Spur)

    November 1, 2019 - October 31, 2020

    Forest Road 1N37A is closed to vehicles under Forest Order from its intersection with Forest Road 1N37 (Bean Flat Road), then southeast to its intersection with Pacific Crest Trail. Map


    2N13 (Snow Slide)

    November 1, 2019 - October 31, 2020

    Forest Road 2N13 is closed to vehicles under Forest Order from its intersection with Forest Road 2N54 (Green Valley Bypass Road) at milepost 0.74, then northeast to its intersection with Forest Road 2N70 (Grays Peak Road) at milepost 8.50. Map


    2N13B (Butler Peak)

    Forest Road 2N13B is closed to vehicles under Forest Order from its intersection with Forest Road 2N13 (Snow Slide Road), then southwest to its intersection with Butler Peak Lookout. Map


    2N19 (Little Green Valley)

    Forest Road 2N19 is closed to vehicles under Forest Order from its intersection with County Road 393250 (Green Valley Lake Road), then northeast to its intersection with Meadow Lane. Map


    2N43 (Sawpit Canyon)

    May 3, 2019 - May 2, 2020

    Forest Road 2N43 is closed to vehicles under Forest Order due to storm damage that rendered the road unsafe for passage.


    2N70 (Grays Peak)

    Forest Road 2N70 is closed to vehicles under Forest Order from its intersection with Forest Road 2N13 (Snow Slide Road), then northwest to its intersection with Trail 1W05 (Grays Peak/Hanna Flat Trail) Map


    3N34C (Splinter's Cabin)

    May 3, 2019 - May 2, 2020

    Forest Road 3N34C is closed to vehicles under Forest Order due to storm damage that rendered the road unsafe for passage. Hikers to and from the Pacific Crest Trail may walk the road.


    3N61 (Jacoby Canyon)

    November 1, 2019 - October 31, 2020

    Forest Road 3N61 is closed to vehicles under Forest Order from its intersection with State Highway 18, then southwest to its intersection with Forest Road 3N16 (Holcomb Valley Road). Map


    4S01 (Black Mountain)

    April 16, 2020 - May 31, 2020

    Forest Road 4S01 is closed to vehicles under Forest Order from ts intersection with Forest Road No. 4S02 (Dark Canyon Road) continuing northeast to end of the road in Range 2E, Township 4S, Section 1. Map


    5S06 (Idyllwild Control Road)

    Work on Idyllwild Control Road (5S06) is slated to begin May 4. The road will be fully closed for up to a month in the Chimney Flats area, from Apela Drive in Idyllwild, CA, to about 1.7 miles west.

    A lower portion of the canyon is closed by Forest Order for public safety concerns.

    City Creek and North Fork San Jacinto River

    March 20, 2020 - October 31, 2020


    To protect the endangered mountain yellow-legged frog, areas within City Creek and North Fork San Jacinto River are closed to human entry by Forest Order. See maps for details
